The Big Barn renovation is almost complete!
We hope you will join us for programs and events this summer and fall to check it out yourself.
A message from Emily Black, Parks Manager at the City of Cherry Hills Village
“This is the first major building renovation undertaken at Quincy Farm. The project had two purposes: to stabilize the structure and to convert the barn into a small gathering space for programs.
The building is nearly a hundred years old, and when we started this project, the barn was in real disrepair. The existing framing was not technically strong enough to safely support the span of the roof. If you were brave enough to climb into the hayloft, it simultaneously felt like you were going to fall through the floor or that the roof could fall on your head.
The Farm is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so it was important to maintain the historic character of the Barn as much as possible. Over the past six months, Halcyon Construction has taken the Barn apart and put it back together piece by piece. Every piece of hardware—door handles, latches, crossties—was carefully taken down, labeled, and catalogued so it could be put back in its correct place.
The walls went down to the studs and the framing was reinforced. The roof joists were strengthened, and a new roof was added. The historic windows were restored. The feed room and tack room had been closed off from the front area before; removing those two walls opened up this space. They pieced the walls back together like a jigsaw puzzle so all the original material could be used in the new layout.
The final result is a new way to experience a very old space. You can still walk into the stalls and see where horses chewed on the wood. The building has kept its historic charm while making room for future generations to enjoy it.
Thanks to the staff and city council of Cherry Hills Village, Rogue Architecture, Halcyon Construction, Cherry Hills Land Preserve, and the special donors to CHLP’s capital campaign. It was truly a group effort!”
